Visit to “The Fresh Veggies” McVean Farm

Hello again! This is officially the fourth week since I’ve been a member of the Youth Green Squad. Its funny how time flies by so fast when you’re having fun. 🙂

Today we visited “The Fresh Veggies” at McVean Farm in Brampton and met Bob who is also a Software Engineer. Amazing, isn’t it? 😀 We helped him with weeding part of his farm. His dad, Mohammad, helps him with his farm during the summer and during the winter he goes back to Pakistan to look after his farm. Bob calls his farm his gym; Bob’s Gym. Ha-ha. Obviously he loves farming and it’s his hobby too. They also bring their produce to the Sorauren Park Farmer’s Market. Bob tries to produce crops that aren’t supplied at huge grocery stores.

He recently built a greenhouse mainly for the tomatoes since they require a lot of heat and temperature goes down at night. One tip he gave us was to fill empty soda bottles with water and leave it in the greenhouse. The reason for this is that during the day the water heats up and during the night heat is given off from the bottle. Since tomatoes need heat, this helps when the temperature drops at night. We learnt a lot of interesting things from Bob today.

This is about it for this week. See you guys next week, same day. ;D
